I have spent more than half of my life with my best friend Curo. No home is complete without the pitter-patter of a dog’s feet. Whoever said that dogs cant think should spend a few hours with my dog Curo( I don’t like calling him a dog because he still hasn’t realized the fact that he is a dog! He is so much part of the family). The look on his face the day I leave for hostel, and the way he comes flying to the door the day I reach; he is one of the most important parts of my life, and he has given me some of the best memories of my childhood.
Since time immemorial, dogs have been used as bomb detectors, guide dogs, watch dogs, sheep dogs, and companions for life. Unlike humans, canines display high levels of loyalty, and attack only to defend themselves. We have seen incidents of children pelting stones, tying crackers and tin cans to their tails, dog fights and much more. These are not healthy signs of entertainments. It is true that stray dogs are a menace to the society because not everybody likes dogs. We have to examine this problem at the grass-root level. Leftover food is thrown on the street which these dogs feed on. Out of loyalty, these dogs return to the streets where they are fed everyday. This is how the menace begins. Further, the construction workers keep a few as pets and when they leave after the work, these dogs are left shelter less. However killing them inhumanly is not a solution to this problem. The three stepped solution to this problem is Rehabilitate Neuter and Adopt. Every town should essentially have an animal shelter where these stray animals can be rehabilitated. The local veterinarians along with a few volunteers should neuter these animals so that they don’t multiply in numbers. Also, people like me who just love dogs should start adopting these homeless dogs. All you have to do is give him a little time from your day. He would give you his whole life!
There were many contradictions from the public as to where the waste from the shelter would be disposed, how the maintenance would be carried forward and so on. I frankly believe that these are little issues as compared to those that would take place when these animals are left free on the road. A society manages to dispose almost all the waste the humans residing there produce. Wouldn’t it be able to maintain a shelter for the animals? The difference lies in the perception. See the animals as a part of the society rather than as an extra burden.
Believe me, dogs are friends for life. The satisfaction that you get when you find a home for a dog; it is worth experiencing! In fact they just worship you. There was this stray dog who used to follow me to the temple every time I went and he wouldn’t let anybody come anywhere close to me, a perfect body guard! The point is, not everybody can see animals the way I see. Without a doubt they are disturbed by the strays. It is up to this group of the society who sees animals as a part of their family, to come forward and make sure that they are taken good care of, and sent to good homes. The others could help by contributing money or medicines to rehabilitate these animals.
When I say home and happiness is where a warm furry friend comes running to greet you everyday!
